COURSE DESCRIPTIONthis is a course for writers who already have some experience writing fiction. we will be investigating the practice and process of writing: what counts as writing. why i write. how i write. from when i write. to whom i write. with what i write. of what i write. about what. toward what. who speaks. who has the word. who takes. where is the word in the text. what does the word take. what comes to be text. there will be weekly assignments and readings. start anywhere - at the middle, at the end. allow your life to be read as text. write on impulse, while you're waiting for the bus, in line, can't sleep. consider the possibilities of form, the uses of narrative and reflection, the changing shape of memory, the private and the personal, the relationship of text and image; take advantage of disconnections, overlaps, contradictions, the surface of the page; investigate the uses of montage, collage, paraphrase. you can bring an image into being in many different ways; you can build out or dig in. accept what happens, even the mistakes. see where your writing leads you. fiction might ask questions that it has no answer for. find a place to pause.
